Jonathan Sengendo

Jonathan is a Director at Sango Capital. Prior to joining Sango, Jonathan was an Executive Director in the Growth Markets Africa team of Goldman Sachs’ Special Situations Group (London) where he was responsible for building out the Group’s Africa strategy, identifying and investing in primarily private equity and private debt opportunities across the continent. During this time, Jonathan sat on the board of Travelodge Hotels, the UK’s 2nd largest budget hotel chain. Prior to joining Goldman Sachs, Jonathan was an Associate in the restructuring advisory group of Moelis & Company, a global independent investment bank, where he provided transactional advice on company financial restructurings, asset sales, business and securities valuation, plans of reorganization, procurement of emergency liquidity and long term new money capital, as well as corporate liquidations.

 

Jonathan earned his MEng and BA Honours in Aerospace & Aerothermal Engineering from the University of Cambridge. He sits on several company and fund advisory boards.

There have been several iterations of how to adapt the traditional PE fund for Africa's unique challenges. These include permanent capital vehicles, de novo funds and sovereign wealth funds. Are these iterations performing any better? What are the lessons for traditional PE from these experiments? What other iterations are LPs like DFIs willing to invest in next?
